UNITED FOOTBALL LEAGUE BOARD GRANTS CONDITIONAL APPROVAL FOR NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, TO HOST SIXTH TEAM

Former CFL team owner Jim Speros will lead the UFL expansion franchise in the Tidewater region alongside General Manager and Super Bowl XXII MVP Doug Williams

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – NEW YORK, NY – Monday, June 21 – The United Football League board has agreed a conditional approval for Norfolk, Virginia, to host the league’s sixth team that will commence play in 2011.

Meeting at the Cornell Club in New York, the board agreed that Virginia businessman Jim Speros will become the provisional Tidewater region team’s owner. Speros was a founding owner of the Baltimore Stallions, the only American-based team to win a Canadian Football League Grey Cup in 1995.

From 1993 to 1997 he was the President and owner of the Stallions and the Montreal Alouettes and was the vice chairman of the CFL and chairman of its US expansion committee. Speros played college football at Clemson University and was the youngest full time assistant coach in the NFL under Joe Gibbs at the Washington Redskins before moving into team ownership.

Redskins legend Doug Williams, the MVP of Super Bowl XXII and the first black quarterback to win a Super Bowl, will take on the role of General Manager of the Norfolk team.

“I am very fortunate to be able to bring a pro football team to the state of Virginia and especially to the Tidewater region,” said Speros. “There is already a lot of football history in this area and I believe Norfolk will become the shining star of the United Football League.

“Virginia is a great state, but it does not have a professional sports team. It has the legendary 757 area code that has produced the likes of Bruce Smith and Michael Vick and is truly a hotbed for football. The fans are knowledgeable, there is a military presence here and I am sure they will all enjoy the opportunity to watch quality football.”

UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue added: “We are delighted to welcome Norfolk, Virginia, and the Tidewater region as our sixth city and are excited to have a successful team owner in Jim Speros and a proven winner in Doug Williams on board to lead the team.

“Like Omaha, which came on board as an expansion team in April and has already generated considerable excitement, Norfolk fits the ideal UFL model of having a passionate fan base that we believe deserves a professional football team.”

The Norfolk team will face the Florida Tuskers, Hartford Colonials, Las Vegas Locos, Omaha Nighthawks, Sacramento Mountain Lions and additional potential expansion teams when the third United Football League season kicks off in 2011. Football fans eager to learn more about the UFL and buy tickets for the 2010 season can visit the www.UFL-Football.com website.

Colonials hold final tryouts-attended by 245 players 1

Here i am interviewing Jon Bugli and Phil Matusz from the 2009 FCS Title wining Villanova Wildcats

Colonials hold final tryouts-attended by 245 players-By Dr. Bill Chachkes-Managing Partner/Executive Editor-Football Reporters Online

Coach Palmer comments on a Defender who would have drew flags for Pass Interference or Defensive Holding

One would not normally think a Saturday in May is “good” football weather. About 700+ people disagreed with that this past weekend, as the Hartford Colonials held their final open tryout of the spring at immaculate High School in Danbury, just a few throws’ distance from the Danbury Mall.

On arrival, I was shocked (and Impressed) at just how many players had made it out for the tryout. I knew they had 244 players down in Virginia two weeks before this, and 183 last week in Berlin Ct., which made for 672 players who tried out for possibly 30 spots, with no promise of being with the team past the end of the summer.

I also knew or knew of several players who would attend this combine like event from our recent coverage of various college conferences. They are all players who didn’t get drafted last month or signed to free agent contracts with NFL teams. Some  had tryouts with NFL teams, like QB Ryan Perrilloux , the LSU transfer from Jacksonville State, fresh off a tryout with the Vikings (Ryan was signed prior to this workout, and will battle former Giants 3rd QB Andre Woodson and  Former Pitt QB Bill Stull for the starters job), and former Holy Cross QB Dom Randolph, who also had a tryout with the Giants after last month’s NFL draft, and was released. Randolph is still waiting for a call from someone to play football this year.

Yale had a few players attending including Tight End A.J Haase (above), the Bulldogs hero of the last second win over Columbia this past season, and Punter Tom Mante, among the top specialists in the FCS throughout his college playing career. Several Villanova players were also in attendance, like Jon Bugli and Phil Matusz (offensive and defensive lines respectively) and our good friend and former guest on our Saturday morning show on CDS radio, Osayi Osunde, who had several major pass defenses during the one on one drills. While I’d love to see all of these players find work, the reality of the situation is that many won’t, at least this time. All will take something out of the experience of having “been” there, and getting prep work from professional football coaches. Osayi, who was there with his workout partner and older brother, a former UConn player, echoed the sentiment that “the economy is tough right now, everyone who is here is looking for a job doing what they love, playing football”

Osayi Osunde, former Linebacker from Villanova

I was also impressed with the stories of several other players, a few who we are about to talk about. The first is James Dobson(third photo), a wide receiver from Husson University (a D-III school) in Bangor Maine. James, a 6’ wide out who led the team in receptions, yardage, and average yards per catch last year, also took part in The University of Maine’s pro day March 12th. He knows at this level he would most likely be a reserve player and most likely play inside in the slot, but he impressed this scout/writer as well as some of the coaches both viewing as spectators and on the Colonials staff. One out route that James ran placed him on the sideline going to the ground to make the catch right at the sideline, where he looked the ball in and scooped it right into his torso while placing both knees and his shoulder down, a perfect sideline grab which brought encouragement from the players on the sidelines waiting for their turns.

I also saw A.J. Haase get a lot of work on both Blocking and Passing drills. Another impressive young man who helped his college team to its share of success in recent years, Haase is hoping for a chance at the professional level.  He’s also hoping his “career” day against Columbia on Halloween of 2009(5-75, including the winning TD grab mentioned above with 58 ticks left on the clock to snatch the win) is enough of a resume to impress Colonials Head Coach/GM Chris Palmer.

Andre Dixon, Former UConn Running Back who had a tryout with The Giants, talks to us here…

Thanks Coach! Every Reporter/Writer needs 5 minutes solo with the coach!!

All of our audio interviews, including our 5 minutes with Coach Palmer at the end of the morning can be heard here.

Each tryout camp will last approximately four hours. Athletes will be timed in the 40-yard dash and 20-yard short shuttle and will then participate in a series of individual and team drills. The tryouts are for all positions, including kickers and punters.

I plan on bringing a handful of those guys to training camp.”

Each team will host a total of three open tryouts in select cities in their geographical region on May 8, 15, 22, and 23 and June 19 and 26. Details of the date, time and location of each tryout can be found on the official UFL website www.ufl-football.com.

The Colonials then return to the team’s home state of Connecticut where prospective players can try out at Berlin High School (registration and measurements) and Sage Park on Saturday, May 15, and at coach Palmer’s alma mater Immaculate High School on Saturday, May 22.

The Las Vegas Locos continue their talent search under head coach Jim Fassel at Cerritos College in Norwalk, in the greater Los Angeles region on Sunday, May 9 then return home to unearth local players at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 15.

Sacramento Mountain Lions head coach Dennis Green will cast his tryouts net across California, starting at Montgomery High School in San Diego on Saturday, May 8 before moving on to Natomas High School in Sacramento on Saturday, May 15.
