New York’s Power Struggle Shifts From The Jets Back To Giants 0

Posted on January 25, 2012 by David Levy

By David Levy-Fan Experience Reporter-FRO

The New York Jets controlled the big apple during the post season over the last two years. In fact, Jets fans like myself anticipated that the team would finally be the Kings of New York instead of the Giants. After all, since 2008 the Giants hadn’t come close to returning to the Super Bowl, while their former weak sisters nearly went there twice.  The Jets had control for once in New York.

But a whole new season can make a really big difference, considering where New York’s two teams are right now. Not only have the Jets free fallen into the murky abyss, they may have lost their chance to seize control of New York permanently at this rate while the Giants approach another Super Bowl.  Both teams were in control of their destiny this season.  The Giants took control while the Jets let control slide from their hands.

Kentucky 10 Tennessee 7

The question of how low this program can go has been asked many times this season. The answer has never really been given until this past Saturday in Knoxville. The Wildcats of Kentucky came in trying to end a 26 year losing streak to the Vols. Better teams have played this team only to come up short. In one game the Vols were down 20-0 only to come back and break Kentucky’s heart. One day the streak had to end and this would be the day for Big Blue fans to celebrate.

There were reports long before this game that the interest of this team was about at zero by the time they got whipped by Arkansas. After that some players were accusing others of looking out for their stats before looking out for the team. There was way too much dissension in the locker room and players were working on their own agenda. You would think that they could muster up some kind of want and desire for this UK team. What they did was play one of the most embarrassing games in UT history. They played flat and uninspired and fell to Rocky Top bottom.

The running game has been sorry all year and they continued that with 61 yards on the ground and just 215 in the air. They made the UK defense look like a real SEC defense. The Wildcats came out with fire and they were determined not to lose this game. At the half it was 3-0 UK and there were players celebrating a bit early. Still, they came out in the second half and outplayed UT like all other teams have this year. A wildcat formation was botched by Rajon Neal when he fumbled the snap. The worst part was that he said he was looking for the ball but could not find it. Funny, the replay shows the ball was basically in front of him the whole time. It is plays like this that has plagued this team all year.

Now the stakes get higher for head coach Derek Dooley. He is now under fire for all the failures of this team. Every team needs leaders and this team sorely lacks one. The seniors and juniors never made their mark and Dooley will need that in order to survive another year on the hill. He made remarks after the game about telling the media that this would happen. He has been accused of throwing players under the bus in public as opposed to doing it in house. Whatever the problems are, he must address them now. He needs to give the team a few weeks to reflect, then whip them into football shape. He may be a good recruiter, but is he a good motivator? Can he put the attitudes in check or lose his team altogether next year?

As for Kentucky, the jury is still out on the job status of Joker Phillips. He has had a few miserable years he would like to forget. The near future doesn’t look too bright so UK will have decisions to make as well. It was a great way to end to year for them though. They have looked awful too many times this season and made up for that in this game. For now the streak may be over, but can they sustain it? Can Dooley bring the Vols back from the dead or will he be buried under the scrutiny he is facing? It will be a long off season full of questions and work. One thing is for sure around here and that is the fans will stand for this no longer. It is time to examine what they have on the hill in the program and get it right. Dooley will get one more year and it will not be to go 6-6 or 7-5. If he cannot pull that off then he may want to go back to Louisiana and go fishing.

Vanderbilt 41 Wake Forest 7

It has been a remarkable season for the Commodores. At the start of the year they had a new head coach in James Franklin from Maryland. He was the head coach in waiting there but decided he would make his own mark. He said that he wanted to change the culture at Vandy and turn their losing ways around. He recruited one of the best classes ever and went out of his way to promote the school. As the season wore on, this team started to win games and look better. By mid-season they were on the verge of something special. Vanderbilt University Football is going bowling folks. After just one year Franklin put the Dores back on the SEC map.

Zac Stacy was the starting tailback in his freshman year, but he was replaced by Warren Norman. This year he started behind Warren on the depth chart, but he was called into action when Warren got hurt early. All he managed to do was run into the Vandy record books. He finished up the year with 1136 yards that is now the single-season record. He still has one more game, probably the Liberty Bowl, to add to that total. If Georgia beats LSU that could bump the Dores in the Gator or Chik-Fil-A bowl.

The senior class becomes the first class in history to go to two bowl games. It has been a tremendous year and should get better going forward. The recruiting class coming in is a good one and the team should improve on their win total. The school will need to do some things to ensure they can keep their new coach. He will be courted in the next tear or two as he improves this team. When you look back on the season Vandy could have won 8 or nine games. With the return of players like QB Jordan Rodgers and WR Jordan Matthews, the future looks bright on West End Ave.

Alabama 42 Auburn 14

Well, it was payback day for the Tied and did they get their payback. Trent Richardson may have put himself at the top of the Heisman list. He made up for his disappointing showing against LSU and ran all over the Tigers for 203 yards and a touchdown. QB A.J. McCarron threw for three first half scores and the Tide defense dominated in this one. Next stop for Bama looks to be the BCS title game and a rematch with LSU.

That is one game that everyone will want to see after the thriller the two teams played a few weeks ago.

LSU 41 Arkansas 17

So much for the fight the Razorbacks were supposed to put up. They started out just fine as they converted two turnovers into a 14-0 lead. After that, it was over. The Tigers pounded Arkansas into submission and outscored them 41-3 the rest of the way. It was worse than the final score suggested too.

The Tigers will now play Georgia for the SEC championship on Dec. 3 in Atlanta and with a win move on to the BCS title game. LSU has been well prepared all year and they will probably play for the title even if they lose to the Bulldogs.

Other Scores:
Georgia 31 Georgia Tech 17
Florida St. 21 Florida 7
Miss. St. 31 Ole Miss. 3
S. Carolina 34 Clemson 13

Cincinnati 24 Tennessee 17

It is that time of year where teams start to make that playoff push. Now is when you solidify your position or make a move to do the same. So, on Sunday the Titans were looking to keep pace with the Houston Texans for the division lead, or at least stay in contention for a wild-card spot. Neither goal was accomplished as Tennessee decided to leave its first half offense in the locker room after the intermission.

They started off with a field goal to make it 3-0 and the Bengals responded with a score of their own to make it 7-3. The Titans answered right back by driving 78 and 81 yards on their last two possessions to take a 17-7 halftime lead. It was a first half that saw Chris Johnson break off a 20-yard run that was his best looking run of the year. He even grabbed a pass and got good yardage out of that one. He looked like he was running very good, hitting holes and looking for open field. By the half he had 55 yards on the ground. Matt Hasselbeck was hitting his receivers, though at times he over or under threw them too. He would finish with 166 yards in the half and touchdown passes to Damian Williams and Lavelle Hawkins. After such an impressive first half it looked like Tennessee would finish this game at 5-3 with a lot of hope.

The second half was about as bad as you can get. All of sudden, Hasselbeck could not connect with a receiver. Johnson was just stopped in his tracks and was only able to get nine more yards in the second half. Hawkins got hurt (finger), as did Nate Washington when he pulled up lame with a bruised hip. Later, TE Jared Cook hurt his leg too. On top of that he squandered a possible game winning drive by fumbling the ball after a catch. How many times have you heard that you fall down and get the yards instead of trying to do more than you should? Well Cook did not get the memo or forgot and his turnover allowed the Bengals to kick a field goal to make it 24-17. The two minute offense was horrible as the team threw short passes to the middle of the field and never threatened to score.

The defense made rookie QB Andy Dalton look like a 10-year vet. He was cool and calm and improvised whenever he had to. He threw passes right in between defenders and moved his team down the field three times to take the lead. RB Cedric Benson ran for 78 hard yards and I mean hard. It was the kind of hard running that the Titans cannot seem to do. They allowed the Bengals to get good yardage on first down over and over. They made another rookie, A.J. Green, look like a vet as well as he was targeted seven times and caught the ball every time. On one play he got a pass interference call on Jason McCourty that was questionable. The replay shows that he jumped into McCourty while the two went for the ball.

In the end, it was another embarrassing loss that has the fans frustrated. They have no idea what team is going to show up and even when it starts good it may not end that way. They ran the ball well in the first half but went away from that in the second. If you want to get C.J. running better you have to give him the ball more. There were several calls that could be seen as questionable that affected the game. The defense looked lost the last two quarters and could not stop Dalton from moving the football. They killed themselves with penalties when they needed them the least and ended up with nine for 87 yards. Three fumbles added to the woes of this team and now they look like the 8-8 team they are used to being.

The anger and frustration is now setting in on the fans here. They do not understand how one team can come out and play a good half and disappear in the second. There are many more questions coming out of Nashville and one of them is what will they do at receiver? The group is paper thin now and they may have to look outside to get help. The name of Terrell Owens has come up, but that signing looks doubtful. There is still time to right the ship but there has to be more consistency before this team will make the playoffs. Will the receivers they have be enough? Will C.J. continue on this horrid pace, or will he pick it up? Will Hasslebeck finish the season, or will the call for rookie Jake Locker get too loud to resist? Somehow, someway, they need to figure things out cause this town is really tired of having a .500 team here.

Atlanta 31 Indianapolis 10

In a season gone bad, the Colts find ways to keep the losing going. This time they got a taste of youth as rookie WR Julio Jones torched them for two two touchdowns of 50 and 80 yards. He only caught one other pass and ended up with 131 yards and a show of force from the young man. QB Matt Ryan was sharp going 14-24 for 275 yards with three touchdowns and a passer rating of 120.7 to boot. The only mistake he made was throwing a pick six to CB Jerraud Powers for the Colts only score. Michael Turner and Tony Gonzalez had the other scores for Atlanta in the rout.

The stats tell the story of how inept the Indy offense is. They had just 10 first downs and held the ball for a little over 22 minutes. They had two turnovers and 186 total yards. Eventually, Curtis Painter would get yanked in favor of Dan Orlovsky. No knock on the guy, but it’s getting bad when you go to that level. Painter finished 13-27 for only 98 yards and his rating of 41.9 was woeful. The offense never made it into the red zone and right now do not look to be a threat anyone.

In our wildest dreams we could not have dreamed a dream like this one for Indy. They are now 0-9 and one has to wonder when they will win a game. One thing is for sure, the Colts are now in the drivers seat in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. The only thing that could go wrong if they need him is that he decides for some reason not to come out. Whew, that would really be a bummer on top of this lost year.

Houston 30 Cleveland 12

In the NFL you need a good running game to really compete. It allows your team to set up all kinds of plays based on how strong your running game is. The Texans don’t have that kind of problem. For the second time in three weeks their two headed monster has run for over 100 yards each. Arian Foster is the horse and showed his power with 19 carries for 124 yards and a touchdown. Ben Tate complimented that with 12 carries for 115 yards of his own. He also had a rushing touchdown. QB Matt Schaub did not have one of usual days going just 14-23 for 119 yards. Who needs to throw the ball when you have that kind of backfield? They also set a franchise record with 261 yards rushing as a team. All of this has been done without the services of All-Pro WR Andre Johnson, sidelined for the last five games.

The defense came up big as they held the Browns to 44 yards on the ground and hounded Colt McCoy all day. The only time the Browns QB could get something done was at the end of the game. He was able to hit Josh Cribbs from 2 yards out with just under five minutes left. They limited the Browns to field goals from 21 and 28 yards from their kicker, Neil Rackers, and avoided two touchdowns.

The Texans are going to continue to feel the heat in the South. Even though the Titans are a game and half back they have found ways to fold before. They must keep winning and when Johnson gets back they have to expand this offense even more. They are scoring these days but they must put the pedal to the medal all the way to the finish line. The backfield duo has been outstanding and Schaub is always a threat to have a great game. Put it all together, as they say, and there is no telling how dangerous this team can really be.

At some point this year Vanderbilt was going to lose. That time came against South Carolina as the offense stayed in the locker room and never came out on the field. They had to realize that they would not be celebrating after every game. But after this stinker on offense much work needs to be done and done fast.

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a season that very few people outside of the locker room saw coming. The chiefs went 10-6 and won the AFC West and made the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Even though the playoff game against the Ravens did not go as they had hoped, last year was definitely a success. However, the Chiefs know that they are going to have to work even harder to equal that success and there are many reasons to believe that they will.

Their offense started to really click at the end of the year and start putting up some very good numbers. Matt Cassel rebounded from a so-so year and had a break out season, as did his favorite receiving target Dwayne Bowe, who led the NFL in receiving touchdowns. , However, the man that makes this offense go is Jamal Charles. The running back lead the league with a near record breaking 6.39 yards per carry average.
