NFL Team Previews-the NY Giants 0

Posted on August 03, 2012 by admin

By Kyle Nash-Special Contributor to Football Reporters Online

Perhaps it’s a touch cliché for the Giants to be the 1st team previewed as they are the 9-7 Super Bowl Champions of the previous season.  To those skeptics I say you are wrong — it’s cliché because they will be traveling to play in the first game of the 2012 season against the rival Cowboys (Spoiler Alert for those who were wondering what the next preview article would be).  Perhaps there’s also lack of respect for a champion with a record that is only 1 game above .500; labeled as a renegade fluke that is written off as an anomaly that just “got hot at the right time”.  Doubters declare that if it wasn’t for the 2011 MVP Packers QB Aaron Rodgers having an off night in the Divisional Playoffs, or 49ers PR/KR Kyle Williams coughing up extra crucial turnovers (the San Francisco fan in me still believes this is true), or Patriot TE and SoTG MVP Candidate TE Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski being hurt, or hell — if QB Tony Romo (aka the Dallas Cowboys when they do win crucial games) didn’t choke against them in week 17, New York would have been eliminated from post season play altogether.

Week 6 @NFLFootballInfo and @NFLHistory Tweets of the Week 2011 0

WEEK 6 @NFLFOOTBALLINFO AND @NFLHISTORY

TWEETS OF THE WEEK

Following are the “Tweets of the Week” from the @NFLFootballInfo and @NFLhistory Twitter feeds.

  • @NFLFootballinfo: Continuity at QB. Thru 5 weeks, 30 clubs started same QB in every game, most ever. Previous best 27 in 2003.

With passing and scoring numbers at record levels, quarterback play may be at an all-time high.

Thirty clubs have started the same quarterback in every game this season – the most through the first five weeks of any season – surpassing the previous high of 27 in 2003. Only two clubs (Indianapolis and Jacksonville) have not started the same quarterback in every game this season, with Indianapolis being the only injury-related change.

– Tweets of the Week –

  • @NFLFootballinfo: Year of great comebacks. KC win marks 7th time a team trailing by at least 17 points comes back to win – most thru 5 weeks EVER.

Last week, the Kansas City Chiefs overcame a 24-7 deficit to defeat Indianapolis 28-24. It marked the seventh time this season that a team trailed by at least 17 points and came back to win the game. That is the most through the first five weeks of any season in NFL history.

The seven comebacks of at least 17 points in 2011 through Week 5:

  • @NFLFootballinfo: NFL unpredictable as ever. Compared to 2010 division champs, every division has at least 1 new team in or tied for 1st place.

Through the first five weeks of the 2011 season, all eight divisions have at least one new team either in first place or tied for the top spot. If that holds, it will be the most new division winners in a single season.

Three teams that started 1-5 or worse in 2010, Buffalo (0-6 in 2010, 4-1 in 2011), Detroit (1-5, 5-0) and San Francisco (1-5, 4-1), are in first place or tied for their division lead. If the Bills and 49ers both win this Sunday, this season would be the first in NFL history featuring three teams with 5-1 or better records that started 1-5 or worse the previous year.

Nine teams since 1990, including this year’s Lions, have rebounded from a 1-5 or worse start to a 5-1 or better record the following season. All eight teams to previously accomplish this feat since 1990 finished 9-7 or better:

  • @NFLhistory: Thru Wk 5, @NFL games avging 46.31 points per contest, on pace for 2nd-highest scoring avg of any season in NFL history (1948, 46.48).

NFL teams have combined for 3,566 points in 2011, the most points through five weeks in NFL history.

That record total equates to 46.31 points per game. If the current average stays at this pace, it would rank as the second-highest of any season in history (1948, 46.48 points per game).

WHAT TO LOOK FOR – WEEK 3

IT’S STILL EARLY: History shows that 0-2 teams advance to the playoffs more often than people might think. Since the current playoff format was instituted in 1990, 22 teams started 0-2 and still qualified for the postseason.

The 1993 Dallas Cowboys started 0-2 before winning Super Bowl XXVIII. The 0-2 New England Patriots of 1996 played in Super Bowl XXXI, and in 2001, the 0-2 Patriots won Super Bowl XXXVI. The 2007 New York Giants started 0-2 before winning Super Bowl XLII.

Jets Fans Pay Tribute To 9/11 Before Home Opener 0

Posted on September 14, 2011 by David Levy

By David Levy-Fan Experience Reporter-Football Reporters Online

Sunday night the Jets opened up their 2011 season with a win over the Dallas Cowboys.  In typical fashion, they come back from losing to pull it out for a W in the win column.  For some odd reason, they seem to play better when the game are close.  Knowing they are close to losing seems to light a fire under them that should have been there before the game.

Maybe the fire was lit before the game.  Since last week.  When they went to Ground Zero, surprise the workers and other staff to see the site firsthand.  Sometimes one gets the biggest motivation from a bigger tragedy.  Playing for a city, families, and those who were lost can definitely motivate anyone to perform at their best.

Besides the game and the memorial before the game, fans showed respect their own way.  Flying American flags, wearing 9/11 remembrance gear, wearing anything to represent those social services who responded that fateful day, flying other flags, and anything else they could do to show their patriotism on a day remembered by all.  Many songs blared from Bruce Springsteen‘s “Born In The USA” to “Empire State Of Mind” by Jay Z.  No matter where you went, fans showed pride in their own way.

Will the Chiefs be on the warpath in 2011? 0

Matt Cassel, a player on the Kansas City Chief...

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a season that very few people outside of the locker room saw coming. The chiefs went 10-6 and won the AFC West and made the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Even though the playoff game against the Ravens did not go as they had hoped, last year was definitely a success. However, the Chiefs know that they are going to have to work even harder to equal that success and there are many reasons to believe that they will.

Their offense started to really click at the end of the year and start putting up some very good numbers. Matt Cassel rebounded from a so-so year and had a break out season, as did his favorite receiving target Dwayne Bowe, who led the NFL in receiving touchdowns. , However, the man that makes this offense go is Jamal Charles. The running back lead the league with a near record breaking 6.39 yards per carry average.

NFL CHARITIES AWARDS $1 MILLION IN GRANTS TO CURRENT AND FORMER PLAYERS AS PART OF ANNUAL PLAYER FOUNDATION GRANTS

NFL Charities, the charitable foundation of the National Football League, has awarded $1 million in grants to support 87 charitable foundations of current and former players, it was announced today.

Players receiving grants this year include New Orleans Saints quarterback DREW BREES, Indianapolis Colts quarterback PEYTON MANNING and Kansas City Chiefs guard BRIAN WATERS and former players DERRICK BROOKS, KURT WARNER and STEVE YOUNG.  The grants, which are distributed in amounts up to $50,000, are part of NFL Charities’ annual player foundation grant initiative.

“We are proud to support current and former player foundations and applaud all players’ efforts to make their communities healthy, happy, and safe,” said NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL, president of the NFL Charities board of directors.

The NFL has long supported players’ philanthropic endeavors, and NFL Charities has awarded more than $17 million to player foundations over the course of two decades.  Current and retired players that have received NFL Charities grants in previous years include Carolina Panthers wide receiver STEVE SMITH, free agent JASON TAYLOR and Dallas Cowboys tight end JASON WITTEN and former players TROY AIKMAN and DAN MARINO.

NFL Charities is a non-profit organization created by the 32 member clubs of the National Football League to enable the teams to collectively make grants to charitable and worthwhile causes on a national scale. Since its inception, NFL Charities has granted more than $140 million to more than 1,400 different organizations. NFL Charities’ primary funding categories include: sports-related medical research and education grants; player foundation grants in support of the philanthropic work of current and former NFL players; impact grants to support national youth health and fitness education initiatives as part of a league-wide commitment to fight childhood obesity; financial assistance for former NFL players in need via direct support to the NFL Player Care Foundation; and team program grants that supplement the charitable and community activities of the 32 NFL clubs.

NFL Charities Board

Commissioner Roger Goodell; Former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue; Charlotte Jones Anderson, Dallas Cowboys Executive Vice President/Director of Charities; Michael Bidwill, Arizona Cardinals President; Mary Owen, Buffalo Bills Vice President of Strategic Planning; Alan Page, Minnesota Supreme Court Justice and Pro Football Hall of Fame Member; Delores Barr Weaver, Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation CEO.

NFL Giving

NFL Giving encompasses the many ways that the National Football League, including its clubs, owners and players, strengthen communities nationwide. While representing the NFL’s heritage of community commitment and charitable engagement, NFL Giving encourages long-term health and wellness in communities; fosters community citizenship and philanthropy; advances sports-related medical research and education; and supports the health and well-being of our former NFL players.

In addition to league-wide community support programs as well as charitable dollars allocated by the 32 NFL teams and owners to community initiatives nationwide, several non-profit foundations support the NFL Giving initiative, including NFL Charities, the NFL Youth Football Fund, NFL Disaster Relief Fund and Player Care Foundation.
